New Report Cites the Best IT Projects in City Government
May 2003
by Rhonda Wilson
Eleven cities in the nation have been selected by the
Center for Digital Government as having the best overall
information technology projects.
A report issued by the Center highlights the cities and
how their projects vastly improved local government
operations and customer service.
The "Best of Breed" report stems from the Center's 2002
Digital Cities Survey, which was underwritten by
Microsoft. The survey examined how city governments have
progressed in adopting and utilizing digital
technologies to improve the delivery of services to
their citizens. More than 300 mayors, chief information
officers and city managers were invited to participate
in the survey.
The 11 city IT projects were selected from the survey
responses based on pre-established criteria that
included innovation, enterprise-wide or
multi-jurisdictional applications and collaboration.
"The city projects we selected reveal some exciting
applications and a genuine desire by local governments
to utilize information technology to save time and
money, and deliver quality service to their customers,"
said Cathilea Robinett, executive director of the Center
for Digital Government. "We are pleased to acknowledge
and highlight these projects and the management team
behind each one of them."
The 11 city IT projects cited in the report are:
* Arvada, Colorado: Arvada Intranet
* Boulder, Colorado: Landlink
* Chicago, Illinois: IAT SimDesk
* Colorado Springs, Colorado: Colorado Springs FireWise
* Kansas City, Missouri: Web-Enabled Project Management
